Iris Steensma - printmaker: Alphabet Series

The black frame in each picture is approximately 12cm by 12 cm, but the images do escape this constriction. The maximum size is no greater than 15 cm by 15 cm. One of the first books I can remember having when I was small was a Dutch ABC book with large black and white photographs on one page and a four lined rhyme on the opposite page. I knew all those rhymes off by heart. I love words and I love alphabet books. Two of my favourites on my shelf now are the two alphabet books by the Japanese author and illustrator Mitsumasa Anno, one in English and the other in Japanese, although I guess the Japanese one can't strictly be called an alphabet. So after browsing through the "Oxford Dictionary", "Brewer's Phrase and Fable", and various gardening books for the flowers which just happened to start growing on the pages, this is my alphabet. Friends have been a great inspiration too. Lucas, my friend's grandson, is one of the three putti, my croquet playing friend May has her hat pulled firmly down over her eyes making her look very determined, and a slimmed down version of myself also makes an medieval appearance.
